Northern Secwepemc Cultural Centre Project

The project involved the commissioning of a schematic design for a proposed cultural centre and museum at a site near 108 Mile Lake. The firm of McFarland Marceau Architects Ltd. had been selected in 2011 from among 23 proponents, but the necessary funding to support this first phase did not fall into place until mid-2013 when the contributions of the Society's 5 constituent Bands was augmented by this grant from the Beetle Action Coalition.

The architects worked in close collaboration with the Society through the second half of 2013, and submitted their final report in mid-December. This Conceptual Design Report proposed an imaginative combination of culturally significant landscaping and a relatively simple, yet practical and efficient building of approximately 3,875 ft(2) that will conform to the LEED Silver level of environmental sustainability.

Possession of this Report has enabled the Society to move forward towards the goal of obtaining Band Council approvals to proceed to raise the necessary funds that will permit construction to begin by no later than 2016. The hoped for approvals will depend upon the Society being able to produce a Business Plan that can demonstrate the viability of operating and maintaining the proposed centre. It is expected that the Business Plan will be completed by the end of May 2014.
